The Making of Mothers
They say we take photographs as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone. As a Walthamstow-based artist, my photography work explores archive, memory, and healing to honour the full circle of life.
I have created a new piece as part of
The Making of Mothers
A group exhibition bringing together artists from East London who create alongside, with, about and around motherhood Dates: Thurs 17th- Sun 20th Sept, at the Garage Gallery E17 A small group show bringing together local women artists from East London who create alongside, with, about and around motherhood. Works will explore questions about becoming/ being/ not being/ or losing a mother, and the artists’ responses to these experiences. Making is a form of birthing, and mothering is itself a creative act.
Following the passing of my mother earlier this year, I brought together two distinct visual worlds: her family photographs and journey into motherhood, and how we shared photos through distance till her last day.
Mothering is a creative act, and my visual journey began with her: my mother was the very first person who ever took my photo. With this project, I explore the beauty of photography and how a single frame can carry an entire life story, preserving a legacy.
This piece celebrates the maternal thread that guides our lives today, inviting viewers to reflect on the mothers who continue to live on through the stories we keep
Photography has been my way of coping with grief and bringing memories back from my childhood, where I can still have mom
My last exhibition Take That Shot was a celebration of the present. The intimate corners of my family home, a goodbye to my beloved mom, to the portraits, selfies and places that chart my own growth- this exhibition was a map of the memories that have shaped me.
It is a reminder that while time moves forward, a photograph allows us to hold on to the light and remember the “moments” that stay with us forever.
Laura Villares House curated the group show, bringing together 17 women artists who create alongside, with, about and around motherhood.
